Rating: 3 out of 5.

After more than a decade away from theaters, Scary Movie returns to the big screen with its sixth installment, bringing back many of the faces that helped define the franchise in the early 2000s. Directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez, the film serves as both a sequel to Scary Movie 5 and a spiritual continuation of the first two entries that made the series a pop culture phenomenon.

A group of friends reunite when a masked killer they encountered 26 years ago returns.

Film synopsis

The story follows Cindy Campbell, Ray Wilkins, and siblings Brenda and Shorty Meeks as they reunite when the same masked killer they encountered 26 years ago suddenly resurfaces. As expected, the film uses this premise as a launching pad to parody some of the biggest horror movies released over the past several years, with a particular focus on the modern revival of slasher films.

Just like many of the legacy sequels it makes fun off, Scary Movie relies heavily on nostalgia. The return of beloved characters and the involvement of the Wayans family for the first time since Scary Movie 2 will undoubtedly be the main attraction for longtime fans. However, that nostalgia also becomes one of the film’s biggest weaknesses. Rather than reinventing the franchise or introducing a fresh comedic approach, the movie largely follows a familiar formula that often feels like a direct parody of Scream 5.

Horror fans will have plenty to enjoy as the film references numerous genre releases from the last few years. Spotting those references becomes part of the fun, and the writers clearly understand the current horror landscape. The downside is that many of these jokes feel tied to a specific moment in time, making the movie less timeless than the original entries, whose humor often extended beyond the films they were parodying. While not every joke lands successfully, the ones that do are genuinely funny and capture the absurd energy that made the franchise popular in the first place. The opening sequence is easily one of the film’s strongest moments, setting the tone with a clever blend of horror clichés and over-the-top comedy that immediately reminds audiences why they enjoyed these movies years ago.

That said, some of the humor feels forced. Unlike the first two films, where jokes often flowed naturally from the situations and characters, several comedic moments here seem inserted simply because a parody movie is expected to have them. What ultimately helps elevate the film is its final act. While much of the narrative follows a predictable path, the masked killer reveal includes an unexpected twist that adds a surprising layer of creativity and prevents the movie from feeling like a complete copy of the modern Scream formula.

Scary Movie (2026) may not reinvent the franchise or reach the heights of its most beloved predecessors, but it succeeds in its primary goal: delivering a fun, crowd-pleasing horror comedy. It isn’t particularly memorable or groundbreaking, but for fans looking to laugh at the horror genre’s latest trends, this long-awaited return offers enough entertainment to justify the trip to the theater.
