Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Blending action, horror, and dark comedy into one chaotic experience, They Will Kill You delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, violent, and stylish ride that doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, but knows how to entertain within it. Directed by Kirill Sokolov, the film leans heavily into its over-the-top premise and embraces the absurdity of its world from the very beginning.

A woman takes a job as a housekeeper in a NYC high-rise, unaware of the building’s history of disappearances. She soon realizes the community is shrouded in mystery.

Film synopsis

The story follows a woman who takes a housekeeping job in a mysterious New York City high-rise, only to discover that the building’s wealthy residents are hiding a disturbing secret tied to a string of disappearances. It’s a simple and familiar setup, one that resembles recent horror entries involving elite, cult-like societies. In fact, the film shares clear DNA with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026), particularly in its themes of survival against powerful, ritualistic elites and its blend of humor with brutal violence.

What sets They Will Kill You apart, however, is its execution. The film thrives in its action sequences, which feel heavily inspired by the stylized chaos of Quentin Tarantino, especially Kill Bill (2003), with exaggerated violence, sharp editing, and moments that are both shocking and oddly comedic. There’s also a clear influence from Sam Raimi, particularly in the film’s more ridiculous and grotesque moments, including one standout scene involving an eyeball that feels straight out of The Evil Dead.

Visually, the film is striking. The use of camera angles and movement helps maintain a sense of tension and unpredictability, even when the narrative itself follows a relatively straightforward path. The high-rise setting becomes a character of its own cold, polished, and deeply unsettling beneath its luxurious surface. Combined with a strong, fitting soundtrack, the film manages to create an engaging atmosphere that keeps the audience invested from start to finish.

Performance-wise, the cast does a solid job bringing this chaotic world to life. Zazie Beetz leads with confidence and charisma, grounding the film even when it leans into its most absurd moments. While the supporting cast delivers decent performances, the script doesn’t always give them enough depth to fully stand out.

Where the film falters slightly is in its originality. The plot feels familiar, and while it’s easy to follow and never boring, it doesn’t offer many surprises in terms of storytelling. However, what it lacks in innovation, it makes up for in energy and execution. The film understands its purpose: to entertain, shock, and keep the audience engaged, and in that sense, it succeeds.

Ultimately, They Will Kill You is a fun, visually engaging horror-comedy that may not break new ground but delivers a satisfying, adrenaline-filled experience. If you’re looking for something intense, stylish, and unapologetically over-the-top, this one is definitely worth the watch.

They Will Kill You is now available in theaters.
